Please read this wonderful letter from a mom of a child with Autism. Attached is an order form if you would like an Autism Awareness Shirt. "Hey Mission Valley Vikings! Many of you know my son Carter. He is usually bouncing off the walls or observing the way things fall. His latest thing is using a chain or a string of beads and swirling it like a lasso. We have a real cowboy in our family! And how can you forget that smile?! Carter was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2. He wasn't interested in playing. His favorite past time was poking shoe laces down into a heat vent. Anyone who knows me knows I could go on and on so I will try my best here. I have been so amazed and proud of Carter's classmates and this school as a whole. I believe understanding is the key to acceptance. It's understanding why Carter gets upset when there's too much noise. That it may not be a tantrum but Carter just having a hard time. Also, just because Carter is non-verbal doesn't mean that he doesn't have anything to say. Carter uses an IPad to communicate. Many times, I have heard about a friend taking Carter's hand or asking him if he needs his talk Ipad. My wish is that every child understands just because Autism may make you think and play differently doesn't mean that you can't be friends. So, with that being said, April is Autism Acceptance Month. We will be selling shirts to help raise awareness and acceptance. All proceeds will be staying within the Mission Valley School. With Mrs. Meek's help, I would like to purchase a few framed Autism Acceptance posters to place around our halls in hopes to help educate parents, students, and visitors. This is one step of spreading awareness and acceptance. "Look beyond Autism and see someone special" Thank you for your support! Ronie Willard
